Real Madrid beat Málaga 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu to go top of La Liga, a third consecutive win under José Mourinho and a match that was over long before it finished.

How it went

Jude Bellingham scored a solo goal in the 19th minute. Seven minutes later Alfonso Herrero turned the ball into his own net under pressure. Kylian Mbappé made it three on the half hour. Arda Güler added a fourth in first-half stoppage time at the end of the match.

Thirty minutes for three goals is not a contest; it is a demonstration.

Ten in three

Mourinho’s side have now scored ten goals in three league games and conceded at a rate that has not yet been tested. Málaga, newly promoted, were not the opponent to test it.

“I’m very happy with everyone,” Mourinho said afterwards — a sentence that will be quoted back at him the first time he is not.

The caveat

Three games is three games. Real Madrid have played nobody yet who will finish in the places that matter, and a squad carrying six new signings has not been asked a difficult question. The answer, so far, is emphatic and provisional at once.
